If we become over-identified with our external selves, we build a false identity that separates us from who we really are. This distorted sense of self creates walls that we mistakenly believe protect us, but they only serve to block us from shining our light. If we stand behind these flimsy structures for too long, eventually our true self will demand we tear them down. This is commonly referred to as entering the “dark night of the soul”. The journey into the dark is the releasing of our false identification with an externalized self and reuniting with our true inner selves. Our false identity is that which holds us separate; our true identity is that which allows us to be whole. It is that which we resist most – our shadow self – that holds the key to us shining our brightest light.
